Welp, Kirby got the bug and threw up a few times today and had a fever that I was controlling with medicine and a couple of baths. I didn’t want him to sleep by himself so he was in bed with us – yay, all 4 of us in the bed LOL – and about 1/2 hour after we went to sleep, we woke up and felt Kirby and he was BURNING up. I mean, hotter than I’ve ever felt. He runs fevers very easily and they get high easily as well but I knew right away this was worse than ever.
Thing is, we have one of those 3-second ear thermometers and I’ve heard they may not be THAT accurate. But you know what it said? 107.1!
In about 30 seconds dh was out the door with him on the way to the hospital. He’s there now and I just was able to talk to him (it’s been about 45 minutes since they left). His temp now is 103.5 (rectally) and the nurse said it was probably never up to 107 and that those thermometers are often a degree or two off.
WTH good is a thermometer that is a degree or two off??
Needless to say it scared the crap out of me and I’m glad it’s down but I know he had to be over 105.
UPDATE:
Kirby has a bad ear infection in his right ear so we got some Amoxicillin and then, of course, they gave him Motrin. So they came home around 2:30am this morning and he was talking and acting pretty happy. This morning his fever is up around 103.5 again but we’re doing the alternating Motrin / Tylenol thing plus the antibiotic so hopefully it kicks it out of him asap. We just bought that thermometer, I thought it was more accurate, guess I’ll be going back to using my regular digital one.
