Kirby is “graduating” to the next level!

,

Well, I went to his IEP meeting today and they are “graduating” him to the next level. Right now he is in what they call IBI, which is Intensive Behavioral Intervention, basically an ABA class that is mostly 1:1 teacher/student ratio. Tomorrow is his last day in this class, then winter break, then he starts at the new school (which is much closer) after the break. This new class is 2:1 or 3:1 ratio with some 1:1 for specific needs. This is where they’ll work on more social skills and his ability (or right now, his INability) to sit side-by-side with another student and actually learn and attend.

He will also have a Big Buddy which is another student that is developing typically (basically, they’re “normal”) who will kind of be a mentor/friend. How cute is that?

They also upped his speech therapy because he’s doing so well. He can sit and attend for at least 15 minutes at a time which means he met his goal (almost all his goals actually, these were the goals made just a couple months ago).

So they think that he’s ready — the only reason it’s at a different school is because the IBI program was only offered at the school he’s at now, otherwise he would have been going to this closer school the whole time.

They kind of sprung this on me, but after looking at all the goals and asking lots of questions, it sounds like he’s ready. He really does so well in school and has made massive improvements since August when he started. I wish he would behave like that at home!
