Update to two posts ago…

,

Well, that first night that Kirby did his screaming fit I thought he was just over tired.

Well now I know I was wrong. The two nights after that he did the same thing, but worse actually. And the last one happened after he was in his bed asleep for over an hour. After going through some pretty horrible screaming, kicking, thrashing, biting (us and himself) and just overall strange and terribly sad behavior he finally calmed down and went to sleep.

I cannot accurately describe with my vocabulary how awful these episodes are. He is totally unreachable during these. No speech, no listening, no amount of trying to communicate with him helps, it actually makes it worse. At one point I bear hugged him (actually layed on top of him, holding him in my arms) so he would stop thrashing around and biting his fingers. He was close to really hurting himself.

And yes, Daddy did drive to the ER one time but Kirby was fine once he was in the car and then promptly fell asleep…only to start crying less than an hour later after he was home. But this second bout was a normal cry and he was communicating with us. THAT time I think he was just tired.

So now I’m not so sure this is something even close to “typical”, but then I wondered if maybe they’re night terrors. He has had these before, they seem to be a short phase he goes through. The last phase was probably 2 years ago and lasted a couple of weeks I believe. If that’s what these are, then that would explain why he is in a weird “zone” during it and how after being out and about he snaps out of it. And also, how it happens about an hour or so after falling asleep.

So I guess we’re waiting it out. I’m going to make an appointment with his doctor anyway. He has been tested for seizures and everything came back normal. But that is one thing that passed through our heads during one of his episodes. He was suddenly flail and tense every muscle in his body to scream and it was just…very…well, it was like he was possessed. Very strange and very very sad.
