I know, that doesn’t sound very nice but it’s true. Last night at bedtime, Kirby spent the better part of an hour screaming at the top of his lungs and would.not.stop. I knew he was just tired. I just wish I knew why kids put up the biggest fight when they are the most tired! In addition to screaming was kicking and flailing if anyone touched him or got near him…or spoke to him. It’s really a terribly draining experience and makes me sad to the point of…well, almost laughing. How can that be? Sometimes you just can’t do anything buy laugh because crying just wouldn’t help.
Anyway, some friends were discussing the types of behaviors their children, who are the same age as Kirby, were going through and surprisingly they’re very similar to Kirby’s. These almost maniacal tantrums and bouts of meanness to their loved ones are really not that abnormal for this age and are extremely, if not impossible, for these kids to control. I thought that they were happening to us because of Kirby’s autism and inability to communicate well (especially when upset) but lo and behold it’s not just an autism thing. So while it’s not great for others to be going through this as well, it is somewhat comforting to know that we are not alone and there is actually quite a bit of good advice that comes from a group of people who are all going through the same thing.
