So I went to my appt to go over the thyroid test results. I’ve been having all these symptoms of hyperthyroidism and clearly had a problem especially with all the weight I lost, but in the last couple of months the symptoms have come and gone and I’ve gained 13 lbs since being pregnant.
Well, they did the thyroid blood test and it comes back NORMAL. I find it very strange. But they want me to come in because something else about it is abnormal. Turns out that the thyroid levels themselves are normal but the thyroid antibodies are very elevated…these antibodies apparently attack the thyroid gland because they think it’s a foreign object usually causing hypOthyroidism. And because of this elevated antibodies level, they said I have Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis.
I find this very strange because Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis, as far as I’ve read, is associated with hypOthyroidism wherease Grave’s disease is normally associated with hypERthyroidism.
Then I find out they only tested for TSH (the thyroid hormone) and didn’t do the T3 and T4 which is what I’ve always had tested. I guess they only do the T3 and T4 if something is up with the TSH.
So I gave another blood sample and may find out tomorrow. If it’s all normal then the endocrinologist will recommend a time to get tested again because it does seem to be fluctuating.
If it’s abnormal, then we’ll go the route of medication to keep it under control.
I’m just a little baffled by the “diagnosis” but I guess we’ll know more tomorrow or the next day.
Anyway, I also asked about effects of Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis on pregnancy and they said there are none really and I was like WTF?? There are CERTAINLY effects with that disease because it’s usually from hypothyroidism which can affect brain development. So since I’m not hypo I’m not worried but I’m just not entirely satisfied with what they said. But I’ll wait and see what the new blood tests show in the next couple of days…
