Ugh, spent half the night in the ER with Monkey

Under normal circumstances (i.e. if she hadn’t had that UTI a long time ago, be in the NICU, and didn’t have the mild pyelonephritis) then it wouldn’t have been a big deal…just a normal doctor visit.

Well, the night before last she started feeling a little warm. Nothing major, not over 100 so I thought I’d let it play out a little longer and see if it went away or got worse. Overnight she was fine. The next day she had it again and it was a little worse so I gave her some Motrin. The fever came back yesterday evening worse. Over 102.

Well, the thing is she had no other symptoms at all. When she was in the hospital at 6 weeks and they found the fluid around her kidney they told me that if she ever has a fever with no visible symptoms then to take her right in to the ER.

So that’s what we did, we went to the ER and they took her temp and it was then at 103.6. They did find she has an ear infection in one ear but they wanted to run all the other tests to make sure because of her history.

So they had to put in an IV lock in case she needed medicine. Oh holy hell that was the WORST. It was horrible. It took four of us to hold her still enough and it still took two tries. I sat there looking at the needle poking around the top of her hand under her skin for like five minutes while she was holding me, fighting, shaking and screaming. They tried again in her arm and after a minute finally got it. We had to give her a break in between.

The nurses were all so great and friendly though (despite not getting it in the first try!) I have never been in a hospital with such friendly staff before. They were all great with her, talking to her and trying to soothe her. You know, some of these people are so cold sometimes. And they really tried to be quiet and considerate that she was trying to sleep. Seriously, unlike any other ER I’ve been in. And they were busy too.

So they took the blood, she fell asleep and then I knew at some point they would need a urine sample. So we first tried the bag. Man, she was pissed about putting that on too. Unfortunately she didn’t give enough to do both urine tests so we put a new bag on, I nursed her again and still nothing after a while. So they had to do a catheter. Another very unhappy moment. But she was so exhausted that she would fall asleep as soon as they stopped touching her after each time they would come in.

Anyway, all the tests came back fine – kidney function, blood, etc. The urine culture takes a few days to give a result but they think that will be fine too. She had her first dose of antibiotic for the ear infection via IV and they sent us home. We got home around 3 am (arrived there just after sunset).

Poor baby, she’s in a pretty good mood considering everything, though she looks like hell!
