Yesterday we had the meeting with our coordinator with EI and did our IFSP (Individual Family Service Plan). We outlined what our short term goals are, when we’d like to see them completed and how we’re going to get there. It was hard to pick things out that we’re specifically concerned about. We’re pretty much just concerned with everything. But we set a goal for his communication of his needs, his feeding problems, his fine motor skills and his speech.
Kirby won’t pick up food and feed himself, and he has problems isolating his index finger (like to use the pincer grasp) and one of the things she recommended we try is to put little crackers or something he likes to eat into an ice cube tray. It will kind of force him to use his index finger and will give him choices, which is good.
Well, I did that with little crackers and held it in front of him. He totally inspected it, ran away, came back and looked and did this for about 10 minutes. Then suddenly he just reached in, grabbed a little cracker and put it in his mouth! I was like OMG! We did that all morning, and if they fell on the floor he’d pick them up and shove them in his mouth! He’s NEVER done that before!!! He still won’t hold his sandwich, but one thing at a time, right? He still has problems getting the food into his mouth, he uses his palm to shove it in and the food often falls down but it’s just wonderful that this worked so well…and so instantly!
Anyway, that helped me get out of my bad mood today.
